The purpose of this study was to learn about the characteristics of sub-culture of sport clubs organized for Chinese students studying in Korea and to understand the sub-cultural functions of the sport clubs from the view of Merton’s structural functionalism. For this purpose, case study, which is intellectual tradition of qualitative research method, was employed. The basketball club ‘B’ consisting of Chinese students studying in ‘A’ university was chosen as the research environment. Using the purposeful sampling, the final 10 participants were selected. Research data was collected through participant observation and analysed by textual analysis. The results of the study are as follows: Characteristics of subculture were appeared to be in three parts - personal, sociocultural, and social structural characteristics. Personal characteristics included healthy utilization of leisure time and finding of the self. Sociocultural characteristics were appeared to be experiencing and understanding different cultures, acquiring Korean culture of the sport club membership, and forming and expanding social network. Social structural characteristics turned out to be vitalizing sports events for Chinese students, and alleviating prejudice against Chinese students in Korea. To analyze the functions of sub-culture, Merton’s functional analysis was employed. Enhancing health and relieving stress from studying abroad were found to be explicit and positive functions. Potential and positive function was having adjustment mechanism for living life as international students in Korea. Potential but negative functions were negligence of studying due to gym addiction, high cost of living caused by excessive club activities, and interpopulation differentiation within sport clubs. Through the results of the study, characteristics and functions of sub-culture of Chinese students’ sport clubs that suffer social indifference can be understood.
