Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and North Korea maintained close economic cooperation relationship out of necessity for each other during the period of the Chinese Civil War between the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party. The CCP used North Korea as the passage for physical and personal exchange between CCPcontrolled areas in Northeast China or between Northeast CCP-controlled area and North China CCP-controlled area, and North Korea also received necessary food and bituminous coal through the trade with the bases of CCP in Northeast area and consolidated the safety of the rear area through victory of the CCP. Economic cooperation between China and North Korea was further expanded after the victory of the CCP in the Northeast area in November 1948. Though China and North Korea concluded an “Agreement for Exchange of Goods” at the beginning of the Korea War and attempted to sustain the trade relation between the two countries, the fulfillment of the agreement was stopped due to the aftermath of the Korean War.
North Korea supplied electric power to the CCP-controlled areas by way of barter after the outbreak of the Chinese Civil War. However, they experienced conflicts on the apportionment and the ownership of the electric power generated by Supung Power Station in Yalu River. The conflict lasted until after the Korean War ended and was finally settled by making a decision to equally apportion the generated electric power in 1955. In general, the economic cooperation between China and North Korea gradually took on the nature of normal trade between nations rather than on the ideological aspect, and both sides put the highest priority ont heir economic interest.
