The purpose of this study is to provide architectural direction on the building of national and public special schools based on space programs and plans conducive for children with autism.
The population of autistic people in Korea is steadily increasing recently. According to the 2015 research of the Ministry of Education, 10,045 people were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in the ratio of 11.4% in the whole special education subjects. However, national and public special schools specifically intended for the people with autism do not exist. Currently, studies on educational programs for children with autism have been conducted. However, there"s lack of study on the space program and the space composition of the school building for them. In addition, nowadays, architectural studies have also been initiated by some architects and by government sectors and relevant organizations worldwide.
Autism has a wide spectrum of disabilities compared with other developmental disorders. Since they are especially sensitive to the surrounding spatial environment, they need meticulous care for the development of environment and the space standard proposal in the classroom and rehabilitation training space.
This study is made in adherence with our analysis on the current existing space program of the US, UK, and Aus. public special schools for children with autism. Based on this, to propose a plan for the direction of space program and space standard area to be applied in Korea.
