Yoder puts the basis of his national and law ethical thoughts on the Bible, and he is traditionally influenced by the historic Peace Church and especially by the Mennonites.
He materialized his peace theory according to the teachings of Jesus saying not to murder but to love your neighbors.
If the theory of fair war goes against the teachings of Jesus, he calls for reappraisal on the theory of peace at any price which is founded on the Bible.
In terms of national thoughts, he mainly discusses power and the government.
He opposes the traditional understanding on the government grounded on the Romans Chapter 13, and he argues that it is not necessary to obey and resist due to the fact that the government is good or evil, but it is required to comply with the government whatsoever since the malicious form of government exists as stated by the Book of Revelation.
Regarding the comprehension of war and peace, Yoder shows a pessimistic attitude about a virtuous and fair war. He points out that the background of formation of the fair war theory itself is unbiblical and there are many problems on the subjects like a fundamental concept, morality, legitimacy, and etc. Especially, even the efficiency asserted by the theory is losing its authenticity owing to a nuclear threat and an aspect of modern wars.
In peace ethics, Yoder first talks about an alternative society which is a community of disciplines, so called a church, created by Jesus Christ
The first framework of Yoder’s peace ethics is nonviolence and nonresistance. Although a practical way to defy lied ahead of Jesus Christ, he rejected it and gave it up.
The second is reconciling peace. Here, non-violent resistance is not a concept conflicting with non-resistance.
The third is absolute obedient ethics going for obeisance instead of efficiency based on the life of Jesus
The ending of Yoder’s peace theory is that Christians with an apocalyptic ambition should choose obeisance over efficiency by faith as well.
The Yoder’s peace theory once again raises concerns toward the general peace thought by mentioning necessities to achieve peace through following the life of Jesus in place of pursuing a rational way of human beings.
Since the future is in God’s hands, Christians should achieve non-violent, non-resistant, reconciling, and obedient peace with faith, which is already shown in the life of Jesus Christ.
