A controversy exists as to whether the work of Lee Moon-Yeol ought to be classified as romantic or realistic in its treatment of reality. This paper takes the view that rather than adopt either the one or the other of these alternatives, the truth is that both are integral to the author＇s literary perspective. It is argued that the work of Lee Moon-Yeol represents reality filtered through the romantic perspective of the author＇s eye. This romantic perspective does not operate to avoid the harshness of reality, nor does it act in the service of nihilism. Rather it is adopted because it lends itself well to the exploration to the nature of human reality. After all, the journey of life includes the confused and sometimes surreal period we call adolescence from which comes that more objective time that arrives with maturity. The author＇s pursuit of reality is focused on the inner life of humanity. in particular, what process of returning to the source of the soul leads to the perception of absolute truth or enlightenment, and brings to a conclusion the process of human maturation. The pattern which informs this process of returning to the source of the soul is the foundation of Lee Moon-Yeol＇s work, and, in addition, helps to maintain a sense of balance. This pattern and the relationship of the romantic perspective with reality are the distinguishing features of the author＇s writing. Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on the connection between this romantic perspective and the unveiling of reality.
