Since industrialization, urbanization, and modernization, with the formation of consumption society, the moderns have experienced alienation and apathetic life in the city. In the modern novels, the terms, such as ´room´, ´house´, and ´city´, have implications which refer to not the sheer material space but the existence of an isolated individual. This thesis shows spatial imaginations about ´room´ as a characteristic of modern life through analysis of space. The first type of room is the space which symbolizes the lack of communication between spouses of middle class leading to the solitude of housewives. The second is the space for ´living in ease´, such ´lodging room´, which youth searching for their own identity are striving for, The third is the space of poors. the symbol of alienation and the poverty. The fourth is a room as an sanctuary in which a writer has an inspiration and elaborates word. The fifth is described as ˝a red room in the basement˝ standing for the violation and madness of ´the torture and the infringement of human rights´. The last is the space, such as an apartment and an office of skyscraper, which stands for the strangeness, self-nothingness, anonymity, uniformity. The above proves that the room as the spatial imagination in Korean modern novels serves as objective correlative projecting the consciousness and psyche of moderns with a variety of meanings and significances.
