This study aimed to investigate the vocabulary used in high school English textbooks and determine how successfully the criteria from the national curriculum have been met. In addition, the study examined the propriety of the basic word list from the National Curriculum by comparing that with the corpus of native speakers of American English (COCA). The results showed that about 90% of the basic word list are included in the words of high ranking frequency in five genre corpora of COCA. But all the English textbooks analyzed in the study were found not to include the minimum percentage of basic words suggested by the National Curriculum. Based on the findings some suggestion for the English textbook writing in the future is given.
