Conscious of the fact that preceding researches are mostly reviewing from literatureangle, belittling the voices of actual field officers, this paper is more focused onanalyzing issues, with which police officers encounter while dealing with one of themost chronic duties in their line of work, domestic violence. Furthermore, based onthe analysis done by in-depth interviews with police officers, proper measures andalternatives will be suggested.
These in-depth interviews clearly show that police officers are under great deal ofpressure when they are dealing with domestic violence. Especially regarding‘Temporary emergency measures', their effectiveness is in question since no criminalsanctions can be placed upon those who violate these measures, letting alone theimmense amount of time these procedures take. Additionally, field officers sometimesfind frequent institutional changes difficult to catch up. Lack of communicationbetween the field and commanding department in strategy-building process, needs toimproved, also.
Given the distinctive features and the gravity of situation, domestic violence issuesrequire cooperative relationship between the Police and local community. First andforemost, the authorities of police officers in charge of initial responses should bespecified legally. Also, it is necessary to reduce the burden local police's task byestablishing domestic violence task force with using proper human resources.
Aftermath caring is also needed to prevent recurrence. Lastly, fundamental andlong-term solutions should be developed through an active cooperation among localcommunities, hospitals and other specialized organizations.
