The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between a direct assessment of college students’ recorded pronunciation and an indirect written test within a web-based English pronunciation course, as well as to gauge student’s responses to such a system To satisfy the conditions of such a project, pronunciation of utterances was requested as an assignment. Students were requested to record their own reading passages and uploaded them to a cloud service site. Both segmental and suprasegmental features were included in the recording assignment to test their pronunciation. As the materials had already been covered in class, the rating system implemented in this study rated their pronunciation as being of high quality. The scores of the direct assessment had a significant correlation with those of the written final test. Students showed very positive responses with regard to the direct assessment. They preferred the direct assessment rather than the written one. It is suggested that the direct assessment should extend to online English courses to enhance students" motivation and increase the validity of the test.
