The aim of this article is to show that the passage dealing with the burnt offering of birds (Lev. 1:14-17), which has often been regarded as secondary, is not only integral to the burnt offering text (Lev. 1) but also important in terms of revealing God’s concern for the poor. There are several reasons why historical critics considered the passage secondary. First, Lev. 1:2, the introduction to the burnt offering text, lacks the mention of birds as an animal for burnt offering. Second, birds are too small and valueless in comparison with other animals for burnt offering. Lastly, there are many striking discrepancies between the ritual for the burnt offering of birds and those of other animals.
My arguments against the issues raised by historical critics are as follows. First, the lack of birds in the list in Lev. 1:2 might be because birds are not a proper kind of animal for burnt offering, but a rather exceptional one. Second, it would be God’s graciousness that motivated his allowance of birds for burnt offering. Finally, the discrepancies in the ritual may be due to the difference in size. Nevertheless, in spite of all the concessions made by God for birds as a sacrificial animal, God considered the value of the burnt offering of birds the same with that of other animals.
