Many artists of the Modern Period, who could not be confirmed by existing works, have been traced continuously through articles of print media such as newspaper, magazine, etc. and work photos. However, while online search system is recently introduced through digitization of modern newspaper including official gazette, history and activities of modern artists are studied and complemented more rapidly.
This researcher intends to introduce materials related to Simmyo Kim, Chang hwan(心畝 金彰桓)’s profile and activities of the 1920s, that are newly confirmed, among the ‘Gyeongseong’ related materials posted in print media from the 1890s to 1945 while participating in the Collection of Visual Image of Korea Modern Art: Gyeongseong, Symbol of Visual Culture work supervised by Center for Art Studies from 2014 as an extension of the recent research tendency and doing a survey.
In addition, Kim, Changhwan published lots of editorials serially on newspaper and magazine for 21 years from 1920. Their concrete contents were not mentioned concretely in precedent researches. The editorials considered art as a tool of new cultural development of Joseon people as the contents and from an angle of enlightenment, emphasized the utility or necessity of the education or criticized physical wealth or class distinctions and showed strong socialism insisting the value of labor and enjoyment. In this sense, the above editorials can be grounds for reading artist image of Kim, Changhwan who was a disciple of Simjun Ahn, Jung-sik(心田 安中植)(1861~1919) and Sorim Jo, Suk-jin(小琳 趙錫晉)(1853~1920) and worked by various jobs such as painting and calligraphic worker, illustrator, writer, reporter and social activist. In addition, it’s newly necessary to focus on them as the materials that can trace ideological root of the interests in ‘sketch’ of “Art Poetics” published in Maeil Sinbo serially 11 times. Based on the contents, this thesis considered cultural activities of artist image by focusing on Gyeongseong of Kim, Changhwan from 1910 to 1920.
