Prolific Director Woody Allen
Many movies reveal the pathological nature of modern people. As if to prove that, “Life is noisy and complicated,” according to the character in movie 〈Midnight in Paris〉, Woody Allen strived to create a variety of characters. And among his works, 〈Blue Jasmine〉 produces a schizophrenic character called Narcissism that is representative of the modern people’s loneliness and melancholy.
Through Jasmine in 〈Blue Jasmine〉, who seems to be a hommage to Blanche in 〈A Streetcar Named Desire〉, the movie focuses on narcissism that is created by the overload of modern people’s desires. This paper brings significance to the analysis of the pathological symptoms in narcissism. Narcissism can be seen as an internal part of many consciences born by the society. This thesis examines the appearance of narcissistic tendency according to social positions and the difference of masculine narcissism and feminine narcissism. Furthermore, this study focuses on the birth of character as it expands from narcissistic personality disorder to possible Ripley’s syndrome.
Also, this paper seek to find a solution regarding discovery of true ego through improvement of causal relationship between society and surrounding characters against the development of false ego.
As Woody Allen is one of today’s most prolific directors, one acknowledges that there is a limit to performing a comprehensive study of his works and thusly, this thesis focuses on 〈Blue Jasmine〉 as the main context in order to consider the narcissistic personality disorder of the modern people living in a capitalist society.
