In this paper, two groups of false documents written and read in Japan from a philological view are examined: Koshi-koden(古史古?) and documents on Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s travel to Ezochi(蝦夷地) or Hokkaido, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. The contents of these false Japanese documents are used in the study of false documents written in Korea. First, the Koshi-koden group of documents is examined. After introducing the current state of the study of false documents written in pre-modern Japan, which is a category of classical Japanology, the Ugaya dynasty theory(ウガヤ王朝說) discovered in the Koshikoden documents is examined with respect to its relevance to false documents in Korea such as Hwandangogi(桓檀古記), and to believers of false documents in Japan and Korea that share the concept of “the vanishing of the original text.”
Second, documents on Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s travel to Ezochi, which was written in pre-modern and modern Japan, are examined, especially the works of Oyabe Zen’ichiro. Sometimes false documents have been written by people who have harbored a sense of inferiority to more advanced or militarily stronger countries than their own. In addition, some false documents have been written by members of new religious movements. It is concluded that false documents should not be only critically examined at an academic level but also seriously studied from the viewpoint of representing the history and society within which they were written.
Second, documents on Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s travel to Ezochi, which was written in pre-modern and modern Japan, are examined, especially the works of Oyabe Zen’ichiro.
