This research examines on 120 Chinese characters that represent Korean Onggi, focusing on radicals of ‘缶’ and ‘瓦’ in Chinese characters from 『大漢韓辭典』. Although Chinese characters came from China and we Koreans have borrowed and expressed Korean vocabulary using them, upon being communicated, a language is combined with the local life style and culture and is created again into a new culture. The letters ‘缶’ and ‘瓦’ are representative radicals referring to earthenware. The following is the result of the study on 120 letters related to Onggi.
To begin with, the study found that the letters have been used regardless of the original meaning in Chinese or the practical meaning now used in China. Korea has far more sorts of Onggi and much larger vocabulary of Onggi than China. When it comes to types of Onggi, China has had limited features such as Hang-a-ri(jars), Dong-yi(waterjars) or Dan-ji(pots) whereas Korea had a lot more types of Onggi and it required more letters to refer to each of them. Consequently, there have been many Chines characters borrowed from China and used in Korea but the meanings used are irrelevant to those of Chinese. For example, the letters 甑 or 甗 referring to Sojugori(distillatory jars for Soju, Korean alcohol), or the letters 缾, □, 瓨 or 㼯 referring to Jang-goon (Korean-style liquid carrier jars) all could show that point.
Secondly, as such, Onggis whose words represent Korean(Hangeul) meanings that are irrelevant to the meanings in Chinese are likely to be Korean traditional Onggis. These include Soraegi, Sojugori, Janggoon, etc..
Thirdly, most of the Chinese characters that represent such Onggis are the ones quoted from old documents including 『Jip-woon』, 『Kwang-woon』, 『Ja-hui』, 『Ok-pyun』, 『Jung-ja-tong』, 『Ja-hui-bo』 and so on, which significantly influenced in Korea. This is a key clue that could let us know the transmission process that how Chinese characters used in Korea have been brought in. Also, when referred to the documents such as 『Bang-un』, one can know which part of China Korea had a closer intercourse with. Language does not spread in only one direction. It is a cross-fertilization and thus provides a essential cue to understand the local culture and ethnological phenomenon. Therefore, from a linguistic view, the vocabulary of Korean and that of Chinese need to be compared to each other.
