This paper deals with the relation of the Reformation to modern culture, especially focusing on social change. As far as this paper is concerned, Protestantism had a broad influence not only upon the relationship between church and state, but in the area of economy, education, social welfare, and family system as harbinger of a new civilization.
This paper proceeds as follows: first section discusses the debate between Ernst Troeltsch and Wilhelm Dilthey on the relation of the Reformation to the modern world. The paper will try to demonstrate that the Reformation has a strong affinity to the new paradigm of the modern world. The second section analyzes the basis elements of the Reformation distinguishing between the magisterial group and the radical ones. This paper is especially interested in the impact of the Roman Catholic reformation upon the modern world and its opposition to the Protestant Reformation movement. The third section argues that although the main concern of the Reformers was with church discipline, the issue of church is inextricably intertwined with other social issues. The final section makes some concluding remarks, suggesting that the Reformation provided ideology and motives for social transformation.
