Christian Muslim Relations in Kenya are constantly ‘fluid and in flux’ and are influenced by a variety of factors. Today, the most daunting challenge on Christian Muslim relations in Kenya is the spate of sustained terror attacks carried out by Islamist militants over the last few years. Based on Christian leaders’ statements, official reports from key religious leaders in Kenya and media reports, this article analyzes the nature of Christian discourses on terror attacks and their possible effects on Christian Muslim relations. The article differentiates among leaders from various Christian groups in the country, arguing that they were far from unanimous in their approach to these tragic attacks. The Church’s role was fundamental in the fight for political pluralism and against state excesses. However, in the wake of new challenges such as terrorism the leaders of some Churches now follow the new Churches in promoting a sectarian approach in public life. Such leaders have demonstrated strong anti- interfaith dialogue sentiments currents. The article has several sections. First, it takes into account the influence of Kenya’s history by providing a historical context of Islam in Kenya, showing how this has impacted on Christian Muslim relations. Second, it provides an overview of recent attacks describing some Christian responses. Finally, the article critically reflects on the effects of Christian discourses on interfaith relations. The article argues that Christian discourses were heterogeneous, not homogenous. The discourses reflected variety but in some few cases, sameness and shifting tendencies. From recent history of the Churches involvement in the public space, religious groups across Kenya played a constructive and important role in the development of a broad- based movement for constitutional change. Nevertheless, in the discursive environment of the terror attacks, religious leaders vilified Muslims, while other periods, they seemed more tempered in their pronouncements. Their conversations in the present context of terror , points to the possibilities as well as limitation of religious engagement in the public sphere. The article deploys a critical discourse analysis in order to demonstrate that while some of the discourses are positive and contribute towards building better interfaith relations, others contribute to tension and hinder positive relations.
