This paper begins with the question why voice mismatch is sometimes allowed in VP-ellipsis, but not at other times. While the voice mismatch in ellipsis has been viewed from many different perspectives, syntactic (Merchant 2004, 2008), syntactico-semantic (Barros et al. 2014, Weir 2014), or discourse-pragmatic (Kehler 2002), this paper proposes a syntactic solution based on deeper syntactic principles with respect to phases. To be concrete, this paper adopts Kertz"s (2012) claim that what really counts is contrastivity. Along the line with Barros et al. s (2014) and Griffiths and Lipt k s (2014) view on the role of contrastivity in ellipsis, this paper proposes a phase-based solution to the diversity of the voice mismatch in VP-ellipsis. In particular, this paper discusses that various aspects of acceptability of the voice mismatch in VP-ellipsis can be structurally explained under the different build-up of clausal architecture. In addition, this paper extends the proposal to the category mismatch in VP-ellipsis.
