The purpose of this study is to enhance the organizational understanding of the Mixed Economy that People"s Republic of China pursued after the Second World War during the process of designing and exercising the new state. In turn, it hopes to make progress in the historical research field about the establishment of PRC and to convert the relic from that era into the insight of today.
This study analyzed the Chinese Communist party"s major documents published between 1940 and 1956 to illuminate the theory and exercise of Chinese Mixed Economy. As a result, it shed light on several facts. First of all, the state economy was regarded as the socialist economy but was truly recognized as one after going through the socialist reformation. Second, the simultaneous development of the five-sector economy was evaluated with excess optimism. There seems to be lack of theoretical thoughts to mediate the conflict/confront. Third, the resolution to the aforementioned conflict/confront was replaced with dependence to Communist Party"s guidance and plan, rather than theoretical/economic resolution. Such reliance was derived from the rise of proletarian dictatorship and resulted the convenient reliance to mass movements and Soviet Union"s transition period logic. All of these factors weakened the theoretical logic and its cohesion of the Communist Party"s Mixed Economic Theory.
This study contributed to reset the awareness about the Chinese history around the establishment of PRC from the post Cold War/ post ideological perspective. Moreover, this study also helped to add insight to identify the Chinese Socialism"s inherent limits arisen from its brief ending of new democracy at impetus stage.
