The purpose of this study is to analyze the aesthetic characteristics of men"s costume during the Rococo period. Every society has developed their own ideal of beauty, whereby ‘ideal beauty’ encompasses both the human body and the costumes worn by that society. Indeed, costumes express the dominant aesthetic value of an age. In this study, the aesthetic characteristics of men"s costumes in the age of Rococo were analyzed in terms of four categories: feminine beauty, graceful beauty, sensual beauty, and artistic beauty. First, in terms of feminine beauty, curved lines were stressed in men’s costumes in the age of Rococo with clothes that expressed a slimmer waistline and that exaggerated the skirt. Men"s hair was typically styled in long braids with a ribbon, expressing a femininity similar to that of a female body. Second, in terms of graceful beauty, men"s costumes were designed to evoke a curved silhouette, emphasized by the white lace cravat, and fancy lace frills. Third, in terms of sensual beauty, the men typically wore tight culottes made of white sheepskin and lacy underwear, emphasizing an erotic beauty. Lastly, artistic beauty in the age of the Rococo was expressed in the men"s costumes through the use of rich brocades, which were decorated with fancy embroidery trimmings and jewel buttons. The delicate lace cravat and lace frills can also be seen as an expression of artistic beauty.
