The purpose of this study is to examine the mythic images and symbols in Sarah Kim’s novel The Moon of Maya from the perspectives of Mircea Eliade, Joseph Campbell, and Carl Jung. In this novel, the author Sarah Kim, a philosopher of religion as well as a novelist and playwright, tries to convey her religious and philosophical ideas in the forms of allegorical and mythological narratives, so that the episodes in her work are sublimated into the archetypal symbolism of the ultimate reality. She uses images and symbols to achieve this goal in a similar way as myths do.
This paper presupposes that the symbols and images mentioned in Campbell’s The Hero With A Thousand Faces, Eliades’ Shamanism, and Jungian concept of ‘collective unconsciousness’ may be helpful in decoding the messages underlying the images and symbols in The Moon of Maya. It seems that this novel is a presentation of the writer’s religious discourse transformed into an allegorical and aesthetic narrative. Examining the novel against some relevant theories of religion helps to disclose the religious discourse underlying The Moon of Maya.
In this paper, three pairs of conflicting images are analyzed: the image of the sea as the potentialities of the ultimate reality and that of heaven as its manifestation; the image of bondage as obstacles on the path to enlightenment and that of the flight as liberation from the shackles of the human condition; and finally the image of fulfillment and that of return as illustrations of the Hero’s Journey marked by Campbell and the paradoxical synthesis of the sacred and the profane indicated by Eliade.
