The theses on the direct and transparent interconnection between words and things did exist in both China and the West. However, the relationship between the signifiers (words) and the signifieds (concept) has been proved arbitrary or not naturally or essentially fixed. So the desire for non-translation between words and things or between what one thinks through words and what one can see through the representation of these words is a dream. The metaphoricity of language seems to complicate the issue of words as being the deceptive signs that conceal the meaning they represent as well as words as having potential for the revelation of the truth. It is argued in this paper that through Qian Zhongshu’s translation concept of huajing or the realm of transformation we see the possibility for translation to overcome the thingness of words and stand in the midst of the openness of beings, the revelation of the truth through translation as a work of art.
