The purpose of this study is to compare characteristics of adjectives used in the two groups of youths: youths in juvenile detention center (DY) and general youths (GY). For that, we firstly collected written discourse data from 60 participants (DY=30, GY=30) who obtained equal and more than 20 points (9-12<SUP>th</SUP> percentile of 3<SUP>rd</SUP> grade of middle school) in the sentence skill test of KISE-BAAT (Korea National Institute for Special Education-Basic Academic Achievement Test). Then, we analyzed adjectives used in the discourses focusing on semantic categories by matching adjective meanings to conceptual nodes of CoreNet. As a result, we verified that DY group used adjectives more richly comparing with GY group even though the discourse length was not significantly different in the two groups. For the distribution of adjectives according to frequency, adjectives commonly used in the two groups reflect youths’ thought on the topic Friend, whereas adjectives used only in a group reflect emotional characteristics of each group. In the semantic categories commonly used by the two groups, the three most frequent ones were [existence], [aspect], and [similarity-difference]. In the semantic categories appeared only in DY group, the most frequent and various one was [self-emotion] containing adjectives such as 부끄럽다(shaming), 당당하다 (dignified), 초라하다(miserable), etc. For GY group, they most frequently and variously used [aspect], [temperament], [figure], etc. These results show that DY group described [self emotion] using various adjectives while GY group described [aspect], [temperament], and [figure] of their friends. These findings implicate that adjective use is able to reflect emotional characteristics and to be applied to development of youth emotion test tools based on adjectives.
