This study originates from the observation that Japanese learners struggle with Korean emotional adjectives related to sadness assumedly because the Japanese language has relatively fewer adjectives in this category compared to Korean. The research focuses on categorizing educational vocabulary for Japanese learners and analyzing the complex system of Korean emotional adjectives through a corpus. Existing literature was reviewed to establish concepts and categories based on the characteristics of Korean and Japanese adjectives. Emotional adjectives of the sadness family were selected based on the 2017 International Standardized Korean Curriculum. The results indicate that adjectives such as ‘불쌍하다 (pitiful)’ fall under subcategories like ‘동정 (sympathy),’ and adjectives like ‘서운하다 (regrettable)’ fall under ‘서운함 (sadness).’ Additionally, ‘슬프다 (sad)’ belongs to the ‘슬픔 (sadness)’ category, and ‘외롭다 (lonely)’ is part of the ‘외로움 (loneliness)’ category. This research, which analyzes the usage of these adjectives, will serve as a foundational study for designing Korean vocabulary education for Japanese learners and will contribute to translating the subtle semantic differences between Korean and Japanese emotional adjectives.
