The purpose of this article is to analysis and revision the youth curriculum of the Presbyterian Church of Korea(PCK). The youth curriculum in the PCK started newly by the name of GPL(God’s people, Light of the World) on the 2013. But in this article the curriculum for research used the youth curriculum of the 2016 in PCK. The theme of the text of 2016 is Christian character which means the participation in God’s character. The Christian character on this text is piety, sincerity, humility, honesty, joy, peace, justice, patience, obedience, care, thankfulness, service. The problem of these characters of this text is what is the criteria to discernment to the desirable formation of character.
This article suggests the criteria by the reformation theology emphasizing the God, Church, and the World. These criteria suggested already on the design of the GPL, but did not used as criteria for discernment in 2016’s text for youth. Accordingly this article suggests narrative theology as the basis on the revision to the curriculum of 2016. By narrative theology three themes are emphasized for youth curriculum of Christian character such as the kingdom of God, Church, World in relation to narrative.
In this article narrative and the kingdom of God mean the God’s providential care as God’s rule on history and the Lord of God. The theological foundation for youth character is not the God’ character but the God’s providential care. The kingdom of God does not the result of human`s effort, struggle, and elaborated planning, but the gift of God as God"s grace. Furthermore Jesus is the autobasileia as the Kingdom in person. The witnesses of the autobasileia have to be a responding character as following Jesus. Narrative and church are emphasizing the sanctification basis on the justification by the lordship of God not by the human’s control.
The church is the community pursing the sanctification of all members and encouraging the diversity of gifts of all members. The church of narrative theology treats strangers with hospitality by God`s grace. Lastly narrative and world are emphasizing not universal characters but individual characters by the adventures, the differences, and the conflicts. For youth character formation, youth need adventures as need stories, and youth could have a self-respect through adventures. And for youth character formation, youth need to have a positive attitude to the difference and the conflict among their life.
