This study examines the voice onset time (VOT) of Korean word-initial stops in corpus of spoken Korean from the front half of 20th century. The results show that the VOT of stops is the longest in aspirated, followed by lenis and fortis. While the distinction between fortis and aspirated stops by their VOTs is relatively clear, the VOT of lenis lies between VOT of fortis and aspirated, which is realized to be closer to that of fortis than aspirated. This is different from the fact that the word-initial stops of contemporary Korean are divided into fortis and other categories by their VOTs. The findings suggest that in early period of modern Korean the lenis stops have a weaker aspiration and aspirated stops have a stronger aspiration than those of the contemporary Korean.
