Shakespeare, who is considered as a universal cultural icon, embeds the notion of political ideologies in his works. In his works, he refers to male anxiety, where men by nature hold the desire to overtake and dominate the sexuality of women, especially their virginity. The paper will therefore focus on how virginity plays a significant role in the commodification of the play’s female characters, and how they play a significant role in determining the outcome of the patriarchal society, which results to different genres accordingly. The paper will examine how the conflict of male and female characters heighten throughout the play and whether the existing conflict is able to be resolved or not. In terms of methodology, the paper will compare The Tempest and Othello and refer to Andrew Hiscock’s examination of the culturally constructed gender politics to frame the paper’s analysis. The symbolic differences of female protagonists will ultimately show how their actions influence the hierarchy of the constructed gender politics. Such division of genre, whether comedy or tragedy, is defined based on whether reconciliation can be achieved or not according to the extent of commodification of female characters. Hence, whether reconciliation can balance the gender differences and whether the patriarchal dominance can be forcefully concealed on the surface are still debated until today.
