In this paper I focus on the recent reemergence of the question of labor’s status as a commodity in critical studies of the political economy. Polanyi’s critique of the ‘market society’ has become an increasingly popular way of criticizing the neoliberal capitalist regime after the 2007-9 economic crisis.
I start by focusing on the Polanyian conception of labor as a fictitious commodity and the way in which it stresses the tension that stands at the center of the modern industrial market society. I highlight the way Polanyi’s ‘double movement’ counters the laissez-faire myth of the market as a given that enforces itself naturally and produces optimal outcomes. In the second part of my paper I focus on the shortcomings of this explanation. I argue that this framework limits our understanding of the dynamical processes that structure the
concrete capitalist system. The double movement concept provides a general picture of the cycle through which forces that support and forces that oppose increasing marketisation are put into opposition, but does not offer much when it comes to the ways in which we can understand how these forces are concretely structured in a concrete historical period. In other words, the Polanyian explanation does not provide much into understanding the class (and sub-class) dynamics that lead to the appearance of the ‘double movement’.
To make such an understanding possible I argue that we need to return to Marx’s understanding of labor power as a real commodity. With its role in the production process and the process of self-valorization of capital, along with the effects and influences it bears on distribution and circulation processes, this standpoint allows for a better starting point from which one can see the concrete dynamics of real existing capitalism.
