This study aims to analyze various meanings represented in the symbolic names of the ROK forces (Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps) and thereby reveal their value systems. For this purpose, the mythical model of Roland Barthes is introduced as a basis of methodology, and the military naming regulations of the ROK forces are examined. Furthermore, this study describes the linguistic properties of the symbolic names found in the research data, and categorizes and classifies these names in comparison with their literal meanings. The research results are classified according to the following categories: ①spiritual combat power(advance, attack, victory at any cost, loyalty, courage, literary and martial arts, unity, unification); ②natural phenomena(typhoon, lightning, thunder, angry waves); ③material objects(weapons, defensive measures, fire, etc.) and ④ animals(rapacious birds(eagle, hawk), wild beasts(tiger, lion, leopard), horses(white/red horse), imaginary creatures(dragon, phoenix), and others(elephant, bull, scorpion, spider)). Based on these results, this study identifies common and individual value systems of the ROK forces represented by their symbolic names, and it also suggests a policy that can contribute to the establishment and development of value systems within the ROK forces.
