In pretend play, young children revealed the qualitative level of pretend play according to young children"s age. The subjects were 27 children; 4 to 5-year-olds, who were enrolled in a day care center located in Seoul, Korea.
We used Westby"s(2000) symbolic play scale ; decontextualiation, thematic context, organization, self-other relations, revised after pre-research by the researchers. The results showed that 4 to 5-year-olds had already reached the highest level of pretend play by that age, but older children showed higher levels of pretend play more frequently than the younger children. This is supports the previous studies(Gowen, 1995; McCune-Nicolich & Fenson, 1984) that the younger the children are the more they are interested in play itself, therefore coping the behavior and language of adults. As they grow older, they show integrative play actions as they construct pretend play episodes during play with their peers.
