It was once believed that Rosie the Riveter phenomenon prevailed in the U.S. society helping an increase in female labor supply, and there is still disagreement on the role of World War II in the labor market in the mid-20th century. We investigate the female labor market to establish whether World War II had contributed an increase in female labor supply and whether the female labor market had drastically changed at midcentury. We address WWII effects using an instrumental variables strategy that relies on across-state mobilization rates, and the endogenous trend in the labor market prior WWII using pre-war labor market indicators. Results show that mobilization rates become less significant or no longer significant with pre-war market indicators. Fundamental factors, such as education and family size, induced the gradual increase in female labor supply. However, working hours and working weeks of female workers show WWII effects to some extent. These results imply that WWII-induced labor market shocks had limited impact on female labor participation, while the war impact was significant in employed women’s decisions on the quantity of labor supplied.
