Three international ecumenical organizations have been emerged in the twentieth century. They are ICCC, WCC and WEF (WEA in 2001). In this article, I tried to closely scrutinize the historical backgrounds of the beginnings and developments of these three organizations. These three were organized in the 1940s and early 1950s, but their historical origins back to the 19th and 20th centuries. ICCC, having advocated theological purity, was identified with fundamentalism and separatism, and on the contrary WCC has strongly emphasized the church unity rather than the theological purity, pursuing ecumenical movement and religious pluralism. WEA has theologically inherited fundamental doctrines from the fundamentalism, but, rejecting its separatism, anti-intellectualism, and anti-culturalism, began to emphasize social responsibility. The ICCC, a typical militant fundamentalism, pursuing separatism for its theological purity, rapidly became less influential and now became a powerless organization. The WCC, advocating liberalism and religious pluralism with ‘Missio Dei,’ has recently had a serious financial crisis, and over the past two decades, as a result, the WCC has become less and less influential over time. WEA has maintained its theological identity through solidarity with evangelical organizations such as the Lausanne Convention, NAE and ETS, but has been more interested in social responsibility since 2001. Unlike WCC, WEA has increased its influence. This paper will try to suggest which organization the Korean Presbyterian Church should take after having examined WCC, ICCC, and WEF(WEA) historically and theologically in details.
