The purpose of this study was to analyze the experience of “Sophomore Syndrome” among college students based on Grounded Theory(GT). Eight college students who reported undergoing “Sophomore Syndrome” participated in the study and in-depth interviews focusing on their subjective experience of the syndrome was analyzed based on Grounded Theory(GT). As for the causal conditions, it was found that over-protective parenting styles, achievement-oriented education and career decisions based on career popularity rather than individual aptitude, were likely to worsen the syndrome. Contextual conditions such as competitive culture in college, low employment rate due to economic recession, and preference for certain professions works also influenced the degree of the syndrome. Thus, college students undergoing “Sophomore Syndrome” demonstrated a central phenomenon such as low self-esteem, increased frustration and anxiety, decreased concentration and avoidance in interpersonal relationships. Regarding action/ interactions strategies, participants devoted themselves to enhancing qualifications, securing stable jobs, satisfying parent’s expectations, or utilizing a leave of absence to avoid painful realities. Intervening conditions such as internal conflicts, major mismatch, and psychological burden on parents were exacerbating the central phenomenon. As a result, they ended up sacrificing themselves in order to live up to social expectations, blindly applying for jobs, exploring their own values or postponing career exploration in the midst of chaos and anxiety. This study is significant in that it investigated the “Sophomore Syndrome” from an academic perspective for the first time, thereby providing implications for understanding college students who have a hard time adjusting to college from their second year. Implications and suggestions for a future study were also discussed based on the results.
