The fronting of a constituent within an idiom without recourse to any of the linguistic contexts eradicates its idiomatic interpretation. With contexts taken into consideration, however, interesting observations are made. When a relevant antecedent context is presented, an idiomatic (i.e., idiom-oriented) object within some verbal idioms consisting of an object and a verb may undergo movement to the sentence-initial position, preserving the idiomatic interpretation, regardless of whether it is caseless or case-marked. The presence or absence of the corresponding idiomatic correlate in the antecedent plays a crucial role in extracting an object out of its verbal idiom. From such view, the present work raises an objection to the in-situ approach to idiomatic fragments or idiomatic appendices in repetitive right dislocation constructions (RDCs), advocating the standard analysis for fragmentation along with Merchant’s (2004) approach that the relevant remnants are derived via the move-and-delete process. The idiomatic appendix in repetitive RDCs may preserve its figurative reading, since its overt idiomatic correlate appears in the antecedent clause. The idiomatic appendix in a repetitive RDC must undergo focus movement while the rest of the clause can be elided under identity, which works out perfectly within the bi-clausal fragment approach. Neither of the pseudo-cleft analysis nor the copula structure analysis (i.e., limited ellipsis) can introduce an idiomatic interpretation for the caseless idiomatic fragments. The caseless idiomatic fragment can be used with the non-copula regular tag, while it is incompatible with the copula tag, regardless of whether it is context free or context dependent.
