Purpose: Using communicative gestures is closely related to later language development. The study aimed to examine the effects of aged 12 to 18 months use of communicative gesture on the early language development at 24 month of age. Methods: Participants were 23 typically developing toddlers at 24 months who were participated in K CSBS-DP standardized study aged 12 to 18 months. Communicative gestures were attained through CSBS DP procedure (4 sampling opportunities and free play for five minutes) at 12 to 18 months aged and the language ability was measured using SELSI and K M-B CDI by aged 24 months. Communicative gestures were measured with a specific coding scheme consisting of deictic, representation, and conventional gestures in behavior samples. Then, a multiple regression analysis was performed to explore the predictive factor for language development. Results: The frequency of total communicative gesture predicted significantly with ELA and RLA at 24 months of age. In the type of gestures, the frequency of representational gestures predicted significantly with RLA at 24 months of age. Frequency of deictic gesture predicted significantly with EV at 24 months of age. Conclusions: This study suggested that the total frequency of communicative gestures, the frequency of representational gestures and frequency of deictic gesture are an important predictor in the early language development at 24 months of age. We discuss the effect of use prelinguistc communicative gesture on the early language development based on these results.
