Purpose: Narrative skills are highly related to literacy and academic performance. It is important for children to assess narrative skills. We have used narrative evaluation system developed in Western culture in clinical setting as well as research field. It is necessary to examine social validity on Korean narrative of children. This study was to find out what "a good narrative" is and what " a poor narrative" is for Korean. Methods: Twenty laypersons, twenty elementary teachers, and twenty Speech Language Pathologists, total sixty participants were heard 16 narrative recordings produced by 3rd graders. (1) They were asked to mark holistic score to each narrative after listening the narrative and (2) describe features of "a good narrative" and "a poor narrative". (3) They were offered narrative rating scale composed of 5 items and a total of 20 questions and asked to rate on 7 point scale, then (4) we examined the relationship between the score of "good narrative" and "poor narrative" judged by them and narrative grammar score, which is objective measure, and the number of thesis. Results: The result of this study was more or less agree with the standard of good story that layperson, teachers, and SLP, and there were common features between "good story" and "poor story". Also, this result showed that this subjective judgment could have relevance with objective value. Conclusions: These results offer categories which are basically necessary in developing evaluation system of fictional narrative produced by children in Korea and the reason for that.
