Cymbeline depicts a fictional war between ancient British kingdom and Roman Empire and concludes British victory over the Romans and the final union of Britain and Rome. Historically, Britain’s peace with Rome makes possible the Pax Romana. But by appropriating Pax Romana with Pax Britanica, the play’s conclusion makes Britain the heir of Roman Empire. In that context the story captures a historical moment at which England as a nation was turning into England as an empire. And for that transition of national identity the play also develops a myth for the birth of cosmopolitan identity.
Protagonists belongs to a story about an ancient British dynasty but never assumes any dynastic role; they have traversed national borders throughout the play by both choice and necessity, nodding to the performative dimension of all national identity. Their distance from both Britain and Rome and their distance from Britain patriotism enable them to realize the futility and savageness of war and also enable them to embody the model of civilization and to lead a role of peace maker. And finally, their nondynastic marriage implies their status as founders of empire. Thus, the play suggests the alternative notion of national identity for the peaceful and expansionist empire.
