With the emergence of vicious crimes by young 14 year-old boy, the Kobe children murders(in short, Kobe case) in 1997, japanese society got shocked and had been changed in many ways. Naturally, this influenced to the authors and novels got gradually changed. In this thesis, I"m going to search for the influences that changes author"s perceptions and novels context by studying the Gold Rush written by Miri Yu. The reason I chose the Gold Rush is because Miri was deeply affected by the Kobe case and wrote it as an answer for the boys for the first time.
Miri describes boy"s inner feelings in details telling that she sympathized with Kobe case"s offender boy. In Gold Rush she dealt with not only the social problems that a boy absorbs and explodes as a murder, but also the thought and inner side of boys leading up to the crime. This means the perception of juvenile crime has changed from social problem to personal inner side problem. The problems focused on personal matters, Miri tries to find the answer. First, she argue the importance of the relationship with others who can support the boys. Second, for the strong relationship, it is important for the boys to realize that there is the responsibility and the consequences the boy needs to bear after the crime. Especially, giving the opportunity to make boys feel the responsibility, she emphasis the crimes comes from the boys personal sin, which is the difference from the novel before the Kobe case.
Gold Rush is the first novel that Miri wrote about the social issue. In addition, it focused on boy"s personal inner side problem rather than social problem. These changes could represent the changes of author"s perception after the Kobe case, and it is valuable that the Gold Rush is the first literature that could range over the alterations.
