This study investigates the use of verb-noun collocations (VNCs) in the Korean English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ writings in order to address the accuracy of VNCs, types of deviations in VNCs, and crosslinguistic influence on the deviant VNCs with regard to L2 proficiency levels. College student essays in the Yonsei English Learner Corpus (YELC) were divided into high proficiency (n = 1,203) and low proficiency (n = 910) groups. The VNCs of 10 frequently used nouns in the subcorpora were classified into accurate and deviant collocations based on dictionaries and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the VNCs indicated the following results. First, there was a significant relationship between the accuracy of VNCs and language proficiency of the Korean EFL learners; the high proficiency learners produced more accurate VNCs than the low proficiency groups. Second, the inappropriate choice of verbs and semantic confusion between the produced and appropriate element in VNCs were most frequently observed types of errors in both proficiency groups. In addition, L1 transfer had considerable influence on the deviant VNCs in both proficiency groups in terms of grammar, synonymous collocates, and incongruency between L1 and L2. These findings shed light on the learners’ difficulties in VNC uses and allow us to draw pedagogical implications on vocabulary and collocation teaching and learning in the Korean EFL context.
