This study analyzed the newspaper ideology on political protest by critical discourse analysis and cognitive linguistic perspective. The newspaper article is about a massive rally in which people participated in on November 14, 2015. The conservative newspapers Chosun, Donga and the progressive newspapers Hangyeore, Kyeonghyang were using alternative expressions with different viewpoints about the events.
To analyze the ideology of each newspaper, this study investigated the four elements: ‘participant, process, event frame and evaluation’. First, in relation to the participants, there were many sentences as regards the protesters being as actors in the conservative newspapers, and the police in the progress newspapers were often actors. Second, in the process, the conservative newspaper focuses on the defensive attitude of the police and the aggressiveness of the demonstrators on the police, but on the contrary, the progress newspaper describes the aggressiveness of the police and the violence against the protesters’ police buses. Third, the event frame uses more unidirectional event frame in all newspapers, indicating that newspapers tend to write articles from the perspective of either the protesters or the police. Fourth, the evaluation of the political protests showed that the conservative newspapers were evaluated as demonstrations of violence and illegal protests by the protesters, while the progress newspapers were evaluated as excessive repression and hard - line responses of the police.
