This study aims to find out the acoustic features of utterance that people feel good or bad. Data uttered by renowned celebrities (Gong Yoo, Park Bo-Gum, Park Bo-Young, IU) were extracted from public media such as movies, soap operas, TV shows, live streamings, etc. 14 Korean adults (7 men, 7 women) judged the likability on the basis of 2AFC (2 alternative forced choice) evaluation perceptual method, which was carried out on the ExperimentMFC platform provided by Praat software. Data were segmented and labeled with kPhonetica and Praat.
The chi-square test indicated that the percentage of evaluators who answered "likable" was higher than "dislikeable". The evaluators showed a higher likability to the speech of opposite sex. Park Bo-Young was the person with the highest likability rating of all evaluators. Acoustic parameters which affected likability were quarter-tone 90 percentile, relative intensity of sentence final word, the amount of overall intonation fluctuation over entire sentence, and relative duration of sentence initial word. In particular, former two parameters (q-tone 90 percentile and relative intensity of sentence final word) are related to male data. Male likable utterance showed relatively low tone in entire sentence and relatively low intensity in sentence final word. Latter two parameters (the amount of overall intonation fluctuation over entire sentence and relative duration of sentence initial word) best account for female data. Female likable data were spoken with lower pitch variability over entire sentence and, specifically, slower speech rate on initial word.
Statistics model established in this data seems to be fit for male ‘likeable’ and female ‘dislikeable’ data. It could be summarized that for male utterances, the lower the voice is, the higher the likability is, while for female utterances, the smaller the amount of intonation fluctuation is, the higher the likability is.
