Forms of bed are broadly symbolic of culture and states of civilization. To Koreans, who have long embodied the unique characteristics of the ondol underfloor heating system, a bed can be seen as not simply a choice of object or a means of sleeping, but an important turning point that signals the transition to a modern lifestyle.
The existence of the lacquered bed with inlaid mother-of-pearl in the collection of Seokdang Museum at Donga-A University is significant in that it offers an implicit cross-section of material culture and life in the process of modernization. Surviving as part of a set with three other items of lacquered furniture with motherof-pearl inlay, the bed combines a Western-style bed frame, mattress and various fabrics with Korean motherof-pearl inlay and modern-style patterns and Japanese maki-e techniques on the frame. It can therefore be interpreted as occupying a liminal zone where pre-modern Korea and the modern West enter into a partnership, making it all the more interesting. Effectively, this single bed frame offers a cross-section of Korea’s modern era, with its complex tangle of Eastern and Western cultures.
Along with the other three mother-of-pearl-inlaid pieces housed at the same museum, the bed is known to have been made by Kim Jin-gap, a renowned master of lacquerwork inlaid with mother-of-pearl in his time. Kim’s official seal was belatedly discovered on the inside of a door panel of one of the wardrobes. The bed is thought to have been made in 1937, the year that Kim submitted a work the same as the wardrobe in the museum set to Joseon Art Exhibition. Kim is believed to have made the bed at Sinseon Gongyesa, a workshop he established in around 1935. The fact that these four lacquer with inlaid mother-of-pearl works are unprecedentedly large in size and were to be used by Korea’s last empress lends credibility to the notion that a master craftsman was commissioned to build them. Kim Jin-gap was the only artist with the facilities and workforce to produce such large-scale works at the time.
It is evident that the lacquered bed with inlaid mother-of-pearl in the Seokdang Museum collection is a masterpiece, made with greater effort than normal based on an awareness of the special status of its user. The best materials, patterns and methods available at the time were all used in its production. Though it is based on traditional lacquerwork with mother-of-pearl techniques, Kim did not hesitate to choose Japanese maki-e methods and a Western mattress and fabrics.
However, the fact that very few people used beds in the modern period makes it hard to find other examples for comparative purposes, while almost no basic research has been conducted in related fields. Therefore, many answers have yet to be found to the numerous questions that remain regarding Kim’s lacquered bed with inlaid mother-of-pearl.
