〈Seongjupuri〉is a myth about the house guardian god Seongju. This paper examines the role of the couple and their relationship. Firstly, it explores the cause of the outsider’s invasion and it shows that the <Seongjupuri>’s narrative structure reflects the outsider’s intrusion due to the disharmony, the trials made by an outsider, and the restoration through the harmony. Next, it discovers the respective abilities of Hwanguyang and his wife. Each of them has a specific ability and different limitations and they can complement each other through their counter abilities. This therefore suggests that the Hwanguyang couple has a complementary relationship. This feature can be applied to the Hwangwooyang’s ability as a god. The couple became the house guardian god Seongju and the land goddess Jisin, thereby strengthening Seongju’s ability to protect the family is strengthened. It is special in that 〈Seongjupuri〉 reveals the relationship of the Gods. Seongju has a limitation in its ability, so it points out the importance of coexistence and harmony with other gods. Only the deity Seongju can solve the problem in the myth. Thus, this myth projects the significance of the deity Seongju.
