It has been observed that only a small subset of dative verbs that can express causation of possession such as cwu- ‘give’, ceykongha- ‘offer’ and cikupha- ‘pay’may be found in the double accusative construction in Korean. This paper presents a semantic account of Korean dative verbs and constructions that can correctly predict the distribution of semantic classes of dative verbs in the DAT-ACC and double accusative constructions. I argue that a satisfactory analysis of this distribution requires fine-grained distinctions among dative verbs: (i) verbs that lexicalize just caused possession (pure caused possession verbs), (ii) verbs that lexicalize transfer of possession (transfer of possession verbs) and (iii) verbs that lexicalize caused motion (caused motion verbs). I show that once these distinctions are recognized, verb distribution in the two dative constructions follows naturally from a general compatibility condition which requires identity in event type between verbs and constructions.
