This paper examines the impact of tolerance policy in visual culture by a methodology of border studies. The seventeenth-century Dutch society was a multicultural society where a multi cultural traditions such as religions and lifestyles exist.
Whereas the Calvinists emerged as social leaders, the seventeenth-century Netherlands was a multicultural country where various minorities such as Lutherans and Catholics as well as Mennonite and Jewish migrated and coexisted.. In the case of Amsterdam, the Mennonites, a branch of the Anna Baptists that was stigmatized as heretics in other countries, account for 20 percent of Amsterdam"s population. The reason why many immigrants and other religions were able to live together is due to the Toleration policy of the Netherlands.
Jan Luyken’s Jesus and the Soul (1678) is the first Protestant emblem book with images in the Netherlands. Luyken applied the composition and pictorial traditions of the Catholic emblem into the Protestant emblem. In this paper, by analyzing the individual works of a Mennonite poet and etcher, Jan Luyken, I will suggest the multicultural Netherlands as a space of border. Up to the present, border studies based on nationalism has been defined by dichotomous view as invasion verse resistance, civilization verse barbarism, and we verse other. However, I would like to suggest border as a new dynamic place where various cultures and values coexist. In this paper, we will present how the coexistence and convergence due to tolerance policies will be revealed in visual culture through case analysis of an emblem book.
