The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences of joint angle and muscle activity of lower extremities wearing fire protection equipment during stair climbing. Eight male students(Age: 24.88±1.81 yrs, Height: 177.25±4.40 cm, Weight: 75.63±9.01 kg) participated in this study. Each participants performed under the 3 different treatments[CON(gym uniform, 1.2 kg)/ PPE(10.8 kg)/ PPE+SCBA(22.1 kg)]. Main results were as follows: 1) Right knee angle showed that PPE+SCBA was higher than CON in initial left contact(p<.01). Right ankle angle showed that PPE and PPE+SCBA was higher than CON in initial left contact(p<.001). Left ankle angle showed that PPE was lower than CON in left toe off(p<.05), and that PPE and PPE+SCBA was lower than CON in initial left contact(p<.001). 2) Muscle activity of tibialis anterior showed that PPE+SCBA was higher than CON in right single limb stance (p<.05). Muscle activity of medial gastrocnemius showed that CON was lower than PPE(p<.05) and PPE +SCBA(p<.01) in left single limb stance. As a results, wearing self-contained breathing apparatus, firefighters’ protective clothing and rubber boots was shown to reduce the range of motion of the knee and ankle joints. Because walking time was short in this study, further study should be conducted considering exercise intensity and work time of firefighting activity.
