This study found and analyzed Haedonghwasikjeon by the scholar Lee Jae-un during the reign of Yeongjo of Joseon. Written around the year 1750, the book focuses on business and economy, and is comprised of management theories and activities of merchants. This paper analyzes the theory section of the book in three aspects.
First, Lee refused to accept the conventional views of Joseon society on the economy and commerce, and advocated mercantilism and management theory. While Joseon society actively promoted a moral economy that is wary of the pursuit of profits, Lee acknowledged the human desire to be wealthy, and encouraged the yangban nobility and scholar-officials to expand their wealth.
Second, Lee re-defined “rich” and “poor”, classifying the former as virtue and the latter as vice. He claimed that people should strive to prosper, and called on Joseon society to remove its prejudices against the wealthy, and to give them due respect for collecting wealth.
Third, Lee presented a specific theory on gaining wealth. He highly valued the management capacity and planning of business leaders, and provided detailed, realistic methods of accumulating wealth based on case studies of various merchants.
The significance of Lee’s wealth management theory lies in its originality and uniqueness throughout the Joseon dynasty, but has received criticism for being difficult to apply in reality.
