Abstract The Evolutionary Imagination in D. H. Lawrence’s Works Il-Jae Jo (Pusan National U) This paper is to examine, identify, and analyse the elements, aspects and characteristics in D. H. Lawrence’s novels such Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, The Plumed Serpent and Lady Chattery’s Lover, and a selected edition of poems, ‘Birds, Beasts and flowers.’ Lawrence projects the evolutionary imagination in these works where he reflects Darwinian, Spencerian, Bergsonian, Haeckelian and other scientific philosopher’s evolutionism. Lawrence’s passion in reading scientific and evolutionary books in his young days was really famous, and thereupon he was once immersed in the materialism but later changed such materialistic philosophical view, and rejected, criticized scientist’s materialism and objectivism. But he did not give up his own science as a vitalist, and proposed his unique science as ‘subjective science.’ In short, Lawrence’s position is blended, integrated one with materialism and spiritualism (like pantheism, vitalism, and animism). Therefore he created Haekelian picture of materialistic-pantheism and Haekelian aspects are scattered in the various places of his works. Generally Lawrence’s evolutionary aspects and characteristics in the works are various-facets, in other words, Darwinian(biological), social, cultural, anthropological, or cultural-anthropological. Main factors in Darwinism as biological evolutionism embraces fittest survival by natural selection through competition, so Lawrence’s novels embody brutal, violent, impersonal characteristics through the fierce competitive situation and the mastery and obedience among people in hierarchical structure. The characters are under the change of progressive steps, namely generation (creation) growth, transformation, destruction, and extinction in terms of evolutionary thought. But sometimes Lawrence follows the regressive orientation towards the primitive human archetype in immemorable old days or genetic, generative origin which feels like ideal to the writer Lawrence. Especially The Plumed Serpent, where American Indian tribe’s old religion and culture are represented, and a selected edition of ‘Birds, Beasts and Flowers’, where old narrative folklore of Africa is reflected, follow the primitive pattern in evolutionary vision, containing cultural-anthropological evolutionary thought and imagination.
