It is well known that Lawrence never thought too highly of politics. For him, it could only amount to “the proper adjustment of material means of existence.” He also rejects the idealization of “work” as a “protestant ethic,” since it has only concealed the fundamental link between work and life and helped to produce “wage-slaves.” The distinction between life and material subsistence is crucial for Lawrence, as a starting point for a further thinking on life. In many ways, it corresponds to the two meanings of life, bios and zoē in the Greek tradition, although Lawrence’s thinking operates with a fundamentally different framework. The concepts of bios and zoē have come to critical attention lately through discourses on biopolitics which consider life to be the fundamental object for modern politics. Herein lies the relevance of Lawrence’s distinction, since he defined politics in terms of its (non-)association with what he calls life. This paper attempts to place Lawrence’s idea of life within the context of recent discursive arguments on biopolitics, specifically Hannah Arendt’s and Giorgio Agamben’s, and to investigate whether it offers any suggestions regarding the resolution to the problems of anti-life biopolitics. In so doing, it also seeks to get a better understanding of Lawrence’s particularly elusive thought on “life.”
