Critical Review of Applying the Response-Based Approach to ClassroomsKim, Sun-BaeThis study first focuses on the understandings of the theoretical backgrounds of the Response-Based Approach as a major instructional method for literature education in classrooms and then critically reviews how this approach is practiced in the current school curricula. The results from this study are summarized as follows. First, the introduction of the Response-Based Approach has played a central role in helping learners, who have been marginalized in the traditional text-centered and teacher-centered literature education, to be active and constructive learners in their study. Second, the Response-Based Approach has provided hope and expectation for literature learning, showing that learners are able to reconstruct their literary experiences for themselves through aesthetic exchange with text beyond the traditional text-understanding approach and thus deepen their literary experience and thought.Third, the Response-Based Approach requires a new way of thinking in that the basic teaching-learning process (‘establishment of response - clarification - generalization’) can be changed depending on many factors such as learner, teacher, teaching-learning objectives and strategies, and classroom situations.Finally, we cannot say in confidence that the Response-Based Approach has consolidated its position in both the current curriculum and schools for literature education. In order to revive it as an innovative instructional strategy in schools for literature education, thus, the Response-Based Approach needs to make sure that the instructional materials such as texts and teachers' manuals should be specified and proper to be compatible with school curriculum and that their contents be various and well organized.
