The South Korean government has largely educated people about North Korea from the perspectives of anti-communism, unification and security, and unification. The “state-authored history textbooks,” which have been projected under the standardization policy since October 2015, are evaluated as a return to anticommunism education. Despite the efforts of education academics for the evolution of anti-communist education to the unification education beginning in the late 1980s and the improvement of inter-Korean relations since the end of the 1990s, the return to anti-communist education indicates that anti-communism has remained within South Korea. The problem is that emphasizing the point that “North Korea caused the Korean War” through state-authored history textbooks gets in the way of unification education aimed at unification. We can see what actual encounters would be like between the people of the two Koreas who have been trained to feel sympathy and vigilance for one another from the lives of North Korean defectors living in South Korea. In order to present this, this paper analyzed how the education that the people of the two Koreas have had about each other has affected people by looking at the lives of North Korean defectors living in South Korea focusing on the Korean War.
